The climate commitments of major companies generally lack credibility and transparency, according to a report published in February 2023 by the think tanks NewClimate Institute and Carbon Market Watch. The study examines the ambitions and strategies of 24 multinationals from all sectors, which together accounted for some 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions in 2019. What they have in common is that they highlight their commitment to the climate. But the reality is often far from living up to their promises, concludes the report, which notes a general lack of progress since a previous edition a year ago. How can investors ensure that the climate plans these companies are putting in place are effective and, above all, credible? Sabine Döbeli, CEO of Swiss Sustainable Finance, analyses the fine line between good faith and greenwashing.
